Move Your Booty!

So long, baby weight! I signed up for my first fitness challenge hosted by September Farm and The Farmers Wife! I figured this one was doable and a way to actually motivate myself to be active when I can throughout the day and in the evenings. And, anyone who participates has the chance to win some moolah. The goals are simple - 10,000 steps a day, 5 days a week in the month of July. Sounds easy enough, right?

I picked up a simple pedometer, paid my $1 entry fee (I'm fully expecting to win the pot of money, by the way...) and I'm ready to lace up my new tennies that I found on clearance at Target. I'm looking into getting a fitbit but can't decide which one I want. The challenge starts July 1st and I didn't want to purchase something on a whim so my cheap-o pedometer will have to work this time around. If I can actually stay on track, I might be able to justify spending the cash on a legit activity tracker of some sort. And I should probably start drinking water and stop eating oreos at night if I'm being serious about this.

But I love oreos, so that one will be tough...

Anyone who wants to join in the challenge can do so by filling out this form and paying the one buck. Happy moving!

...like a rainbow.

Oh, Gracyn. This girl of ours is really something else, I tell you what. The older she gets, the more fun I have watching and listening to her. She sings more than she talks these days - always busting out into a made-up song as she plays with her toys. She'll dance around and ask make us to join in by holding our hands or cupping our face and singing really close. Songs carry over to bedtime and we have to sing 4 particular songs before she'll go to sleep...
Wheels on the Bus
Twinkle, Twinkle
Mary Had a Little Lamb
Baa Baa Black Sheep
She will cut you if you forget to sing one of them and you best not get them out of order or you'll have to start all over. Most of the time she wants to sing them while laying in bed. And then again at the door before you leave the room. And if she wakes up in the middle of the night, really the only thing that will help her get back to sleep is if you sing the same damn songs again.

I mean, really. We've come to actually hate these songs.

In an attempt to keep his sanity one night, Justin offered to sing a new song in hopes of mixing up the bedtime routine a little bit. The one he could think of off the top of his head was True Colors by Cyndi Lauper. Totally random, but hey, it was something different!

Turns out, Gracyn is OBSESSED with that song. She requests to watch the {very weird} music video from the 80s every night before bed; in a close second is Phil Collins' rendition from the mid-1990s which is equally weird but I suppose there are worse things she could be watching on YouTube, right?

Anyway, the other night during dinner, girlfriend started singing mid-bite and I whipped out my phone in time to catch the end of her performance. I posted it on the 'gram (duh) but wanted it here too. Must {over}share on all social media platforms! ;)

And if you think introducing True Colors got us off the hook for singing the other 4 songs, you'd be wrong. All we've really done is feed the monster since now we're required to sing all FIVE songs before bed. And at the door. And in the middle of the night.

Summa, Summa, Summa Time!

It went from rainy and damp to summertime (heat wave and all) in a matter of days. I guess that's Kansas for you, though.  We packed Father's Day weekend full of summery activities and family outings. After a week of swimming lessons, Gracyn is fighting a cold and the teething monster has set up camp with our littlest gal but it was still a nice weekend.

There's an ice cream truck that drives through the neighborhood every once in a while. He's borderline creepy but since Justin and I were both outside with the girls, we figured it'd be ok to partake in his tasty treats on Friday afternoon. And it was a million degrees with 110% humidity so it was perfect timing.

The city puts on a summer concert series in the park every year and I've wanted to go check it out ever since we moved here. We finally got the chance on Friday night. It was so fun. We picked a shady spot in the grass and let Gracyn run wild for two hours while we listened to music. Highly recommend it if you're in the area.  There's a Beatles cover band playing July 17th which I think will be really fun.

I'm pretty sure I took enough pictures on Friday to last a lifetime hence no Saturday pictures (GASP!) but it consisted of sprinkler/kiddie pool time in the driveway and naps inside with the air conditioning.

Sunday was spent celebrating Father's Day with a trip to the Royals game. We met our favorites (Brian, Lyssa, Charlotte) at the ballpark, tailgated a little before the game and watched the boys lose terribly. Luckily, because we're cheap and our seats were basically in the nosebleed section, we were covered when rain showers moved through the area. G was a trooper and Leighton {finally} fell asleep in my lap in the 7th inning for a quick nap.

We spent the rest of the afternoon relaxing at home, put the girls to bed early and J and I watched a movie. Pretty solid Sunday and overall great weekend if you ask me.

Ok, I've hit the picture-per-post limit. I best be going. Happy Monday!

Sister Love

Warning: an obscene number of sister pictures below...

I took the day off to run some errands around town today and after Leighton's six-month check up (18 lbs 1 oz and 26.5 inches!) we had a picnic lunch in the park for the 2nd time this week. It was hot and muggy and I had to basically bribe Gracyn with the promise of a popsicle later on to sit next to her sister for 2.37 minutes so I could take their picture. I managed to rapid-fire on my phone in order to get a handful of snaps of my girls together. Gracyn looks like a grown woman and Leighton is gnawing on her fingers as she waits for those two bottom teeth to pop through but they're still so sweet.

related, much?
Sister couldn't sit still for one more second - back to the slide and swings for her. Little miss humored me and let me take a few more pictures. I'm sorry, but she's so 'effing cute...

I'm a lucky mama.

Leighton :: Six Months Old

Half a year. It's been the quickest {and at times, the longest} six months of my life so far and while we've had our moments, Miss Leighton is really is just the sweetest gal.

This month, she had her first cold and shared the germs with big sister, started teething (no pearly whites yet!) and discovered her love for the outdoors. She is SO. HAPPY. once we get outside. She will sit either in the stroller or her bouncy seat and just take it all in. I swear, she even fell asleep in the stroller with a smile on her face while sitting in the driveway.

EAT | She's mostly weaned from nursing and takes a 4-oz bottle of formula every 3 hours or so. She will still nurse in the evening if she's throwing a fit and if when she wakes up in the middle of the night. I'm positive it's only for comfort as I'm not sure she's getting very much actual milk but it still seems to be the only thing to calm her down and get her back to sleep. She seems to be a little more accepting of the pacifier these days so that's helping, too. I know she doesn't NEED to eat in the middle of the night so hopefully as we progress to sleeping all night long, those middle-of-the night "feedings" will go away on their own.

She also LOVES food. We started offering solids right around 5.5 months because she was diving headfirst onto the table during dinner time trying to grab whatever it was we were eating. She wanted it and wanted it bad. We did a few purees - sweet potatoes, apples, pears, squash - just to see how she did with eating from a spoon. Yeah, she had NO problem with that. Based on the way she inhaled shredded chicken last night, I think we're gonna go the baby-led weaning way this time around and start offering her food off our plates from now on. She's getting really good at picking up food off her tray and bringing it to her mouth so it's fun to watch her make a mess.

SLEEP | I went to Omaha for a girls night a few weekends ago - my first night away from the baby. The night before I left, she woke up 2 or 3 times. The night I was gone, she went down for Justin at 9:00 PM and he didn't hear from her again until 7:30 the next morning. So, the one night she sleeps alllll night long, I'm not even there to witness such a miracle. And out of habit, I still woke up a few times during the night from the comfort of my hotel room.

Don't worry, I was back the next night and she was up to no good again - waking 3 times or something ridiculous like that.

She is getting better - she's slept through a handful of times so I know she's fully capable of STTN but it's definitely not a regular occurrence by any means. She still likes to fight bedtime and we end up letting her cry (with going in and checking on her in 5, 10 and 15-minute intervals) until she settles down and falls asleep.

Naps in her crib are getting better too, slowly but surely. They usually last anywhere from 45 minutes to an hour. The other morning, she slept for a good 2 hours up there so that's definite progress.

PLAY | Still LOVES to watch Gracyn run around. She will roll from one side of the room to the other, getting stuck under the coffee table or couch. She's constantly trying to sit up if she happens to fall over and is really good at propping herself up when she's on her tummy. Her legs are always kicking and moving so I'm sure she'll be crawling sooner rather than later.

It's so crazy to me that she's already 6 months old. I love watching her become her own little person and I still can't believe I have two little girls. They have similar features but they're still so different - mainly in size and the amount of hair - and I love that.

Happy 6 Months, baby girl! We love you!

Oh, hello...

Hello, blogging hiatus. Sorry 'bout the break in posting - I'm sure all of you were on the edge of your computer chairs slash constantly updating your mobile devices to see if I'd posted recently. #not

Anyway, it rained 27 out of the 31 days in May or something ridiculous like that and it left me clinically depressed so I've been recovering these first 10 days of June. Not really but it did rain a ton.

It's finally sunny and hot and feels like summer which we love. Gracyn's outside as often as possible and when she's inside, she's supposed to be napping...

But she's not.

Instead she's playing with the lotion in her bedroom and mixing it with hand sanitizer and rubbing it on all the things.

I found her like this today - not napping - and making quite the mess. She also informed me that she pooped. "A lot."

She was right.
